約瑟夫·魯德亞德·吉卜林（英語：Joseph Rudyard Kipling，

1865年12月30日－1936年1月18日，又譯吉普林或盧亞德·吉卜齡），

生於印度孟買，英國作家及詩人。

​

 

If you can keep your head when all about you

Are losing theirs and blaming it on you;

假如在眾人失去理智而毫無理由地向你發難，你依然能鎮定自若；

 

 

If you can trust yourself when all men doubt you,

But make allowance for their doubting too;

假如所有人都懷疑你，你仍能堅信自己，

並諒解他人的疑心；

 

 

If you can wait and not be tired by waiting,

Or, being lied about, don't deal in lies,

假如你能夠耐心等待，不急躁厭煩，

遭人毀謗卻不以牙還牙，

 

 

Or, being hated, don't give way to hating,

And yet don't look too good, nor talk too wise;

或者，在被人厭惡時，不去憎恨別人，

If you can dream - and not make dreams your master;

If you can think - and not make thoughts your aim;

If you can meet with triumph and disaster

And treat those two imposters just the same;

假如你能坦然地面對勝利和患難，

Twisted by knaves to make a trap for fools,

And stoop and build ‘em up with worn-out tools;

If you can make one heap of all your winnings

And risk it all on one turn of pitch-and-toss,

And lose, and start again at your beginnings

And never breath a word about your loss;

If you can force your heart and nerve and sinew

To serve your turn long after they are gone,

And so hold on when there is nothing in you

Except the Will which says to them: "Hold on";

If you can talk with crowds and keep your virtue,

Or walk with kings - nor lose the common touch;

假如你能與群眾交談而不同流合汙，

If neither foes nor loving friends can hurt you;

If all men count with you, but none too much;

假如敵人和摯友一樣都無法傷害你，

If you can fill the unforgiving minute

With sixty seconds' worth of distance run –

Yours is the Earth and everything that's in it,

And - which is more - you'll be a Man my son!

Desiderata 為拉丁文，字義是 「迫切需要得到之物」或 「渴求的東西」，是 desideratum 的複數。



Go placidly amid the noise and the haste, and remember what peace there may be in silence. As far as possible, without surrender, be on good terms with all persons. Speak your truth quietly and clearly; and listen to others, even to the dull and the ignorant; they too have their story.
在喧囂和匆忙中，平靜地前行吧，
也要謹記寂靜中自有安寧處。
可以的話，在不違背自己原則的情況下，要盡可能地跟所有人保持和睦。
清晰細語地道出你肺腑之言，同時留心聆聽別人所說的，
即使是愚昧無知的人; 他們也有自己的故事。


Avoid loud and aggressive persons; they are vexatious to the spirit. If you compare yourself with others, you may become vain or bitter, for always there will be greater and lesser persons than yourself.
避免與吵鬧自負和盛氣凌人的人為伍; 他們會荼毒你的心靈。
你若常跟別人比較，可能會變得虛浮自戀或憤懣不平，
因為世上總有比你更強和更弱的人。


Enjoy your achievements as well as your plans. Keep interested in your own career, however humble; it is a real possession in the changing fortunes of time.
盡情享受自己的計劃和成就。
無論看來多卑微，對自己的事業要維持熱情;
在時代的變遷中，這是可以讓你依靠的磐石。


Exercise caution in your business affairs, for the world is full of trickery. But let this not blind you to what virtue there is; many persons strive for high ideals, and everywhere life is full of heroism.
在你的商業事務中務必小心謹慎，因為現世充斥著狡詐。
但也不要因此被蒙蔽雙眼，看不到真實存在的良善;
仍然有很多人為崇高的理想奮鬥，而人生處處看得見英勇的事蹟。


Be yourself. Especially do not feign affection. Neither be cynical about love; for in the face of all aridity and disenchantment, it is as perennial as the grass.
做你自己。尤其不要虛情假意。也不要懷疑愛的力量，變得憤世嫉俗；因為在所有乾旱和失望中，愛就像綠草一般年年常青。


Take kindly the counsel of the years, gracefully surrendering the things of youth.
欣然接受歲月的勸導，
豁達地放下年少時能做的事。


Nurture strength of spirit to shield you in sudden misfortune. But do not distress yourself with dark imaginings. Many fears are born of fatigue and loneliness.
培養精神力量在突如其來的不幸中當護盾。
但千萬不要因黑暗的空想而困擾自己。 

許多恐懼源於疲憊和寂寞。


Beyond a wholesome discipline, be gentle with yourself. You are a child of the universe no less than the trees and the stars; you have a right to be here.
除了健全的自律之外，該善待自己。 你是宇宙的孩子，不亞於樹木和恆星； 你絕對有權活在世上。


And whether or not it is clear to you, no doubt the universe is unfolding as it should. Therefore be at peace with God, whatever you conceive Him to be. And whatever your labors and aspirations, in the noisy confusion of life, keep peace in your soul. 
而不管你是否能看得清楚，宇宙必定是正規地展開的。 因此，不管你認為神是怎樣的，都要樂意接受祂的安排。 無論你做出甚麼努力，有甚麼願望，在嘈雜的生活中要留意保持內心的安寧。

With all its sham, drudgery and broken dreams, it is still a beautiful world. Be cheerful. Strive to be happy.
