The Nature and Function of Religious Faith

"Religion is not an imposition of understanding upon reality, but a conscious and willing surrender of any attempt at understanding ultimate reality in the face of the impossibility of the task - 'a surrender of reason to faith'. It is a buffer against a potentially catastrophic conflict between man's fundamental drive to understand and the essentially incomprehensible nature of reality."

Guide to Wrecking your Life through Religion:

1. Start with the premise that you have some incurable uncleanness or sin.

2. Believe that your human nature is a sin that needs to be forgiven, a disease that needs to be cured, a frightening monster, and an evil that needs to be suppressed.

3. Pin your hopes on the next life and don't care about this life.

4. Refuse to accept the guidance of your own inner voice or intuition.

5. Give others power and authority to determine your beliefs, values, goals, wishes and opinions.

6. Fear, reject, condemn and avoid any person or thing that is not approved by the above-mentioned "authority".

7. Focus on behavior modification, introspection item lists, dos and don'ts, and obeying and following the rules.

8. As a sign of "spiritual maturity", give up or stifle your legitimate needs, desires, interests, and ambitions, and call it "suppressing selfish desires."

9. Ensure that everything and everyone in your life is clearly labeled.

10. Regard science, psychology, and philosophy as "secular," "fleshly," or "tools of the Devil", and avoid them at all costs.

11. Draw a clear line between "sacred" and "secular", and divide your world accordingly.

12. Divide all human beings into "us" and "them", stay away from "them", and judge "them" as evil.

13. Think about everything in life in black and white terms, with no grey areas permitted.

14. Do your utmost to maintain the image that the religious group requires you to display, carefully hiding any inconsistent tendencies. Invest much time and energy in cultivating this superficial personality in order to please others in the group.

15. Don't ask questions, don't air any suspicions, don't challenge authority, don't think for yourself, don't listen to your inner voice. Even if you have to run contrary to your deepest convictions, continue to believe and obey blindly.
